Gerrit de Veer
(approx. 1570 - after 1598)
The Dutch navigator, who participated in the third voyage of
Willem
Barents (1596), aimed at finding the Northern Sea Route. De Veer
kept a diary of the expedition and in 1597 became the first person
to observe and describe the effect of Novaya Zemlya, as well as the
first Western European to observe hypervitaminosis A caused by
eating a polar bear liver.
The mountain between the glaciers
of Sverdrup and North Franklin in the north-west of the Land of
Gustav V, the island of Northeastern Land, Spitsbergen. The
coordinates are 80° 05.0'N 19° 40.0'E.

miles southeast of Cape Desire on the Kara coast of the northern
island of Novaya Zemlya. Called V. Barents. |
