Ehrenberg Christian Gottfried

(19.04.1795 27.06.1876)

 

German naturalist, zoologist, geologist, founder of micropaleontology, botanist, mycologist.

Born in Delice.

His doctoral thesis, which he defended in 1818, was devoted to mushrooms.

In 1820 - 1825 during a scientific expedition to the Middle East with his friend Wilhelm Hemprih, he collected thousands of samples of plants and animals.He explored parts of Egypt, the Libyan desert, the Nile Valley and the northern coast of the Red Sea, where he studied the corals. Subsequently, he visited parts of Syria, Arabia and Abyssinia. Some results of these journeys were published by Humboldt in 1826. Upon his return, he published several works on insects and corals and two volumes of the work of Symbelae physicae (1828–1834), with a considerable amount of information about mammals, birds, and insects.

He died in Berlin. He was buried in St. Mariansk and St. Nicholas cemetery.

A small island north  Lange Island in the Bastian Islands. The coordinates are 79º 02.0'N    21º 09.0'E.
