Chaplin Petr Avraamovich

Captain-Commander, participant and one of the historiographers of the First Kamchatka Expedition V. Bering, a researcher of the Bering Sea.

Born in a military family. In 1718 he entered the naval service of the midshipman. At the end of the Naval Academy in 1724, he was enlisted in the detachment of A. Chirikov , made a latitudinal crossing with Siberia and helped him in determining the latitudinal extent of Eurasia.

Later, Chaplin took part in the discoveries and topographic works during the voyages of 1728 and 1729 on the boat "Saint Gabriel", the captain of which was Bering.Together with Chirikov, Chaplin led the “Journal of the Being of the Kamchatka Expedition” (partially published in 1823 ), which allowed it to recreate its history. In1728, “for his work in the Siberian expedition”, Chaplin was promoted to midshipman.

Back in 1730 in St. Petersburg, together with Bering and Chirikov made the final map of navigation. It greatly exceeded the former in accuracy of the outlines of the coastal strip of Northeast Asia and became the basis for the image of this part of the continent on all Western European maps. In the same year he was promoted to non-lieutenant.

In 1732–1760 Chaplin commanded various ships and detachments of frigates of the Baltic Fleet and was almost in constant navigation. In the years 1760–1762 he was captain of the port of Revel, helped prepare the high-latitude expedition of V. Chichagov.

In 1751 Chaplin was awarded the rank of captain of the 3rd rank , in 1756 - the second rank, and in 1758 - the first rank.

December 21, 1762, for old age and illness, Chaplin was appointed captain of the port of Arkhangelsk. In October of the following year, he was promoted to captain-commander , and on August 29, 1765 he died at the place of service in the city of Arkhangelsk.
