Cherevichny Ivan Ivanovich
(18(31).03.1909–15.02.1971)
Outstanding Soviet polar pilot.
Born in the city of Olviopol (now Pervomaisk) of the Nikolaev
region in a working class family.
He graduated from 7 classes.
In 1928–1930 and 1932–1933
served in the Red Army.
In 1929, Cherevichny graduated from the theoretical school of
pilots, in 1932 - the United Military School of pilots and
technicians.
Since 1934, service Cherevichny began in polar aviation.
He mastered and explored a number of airways in Siberia, in 1938
participated in the removal of Papanins from the North Pole-1
drifting station, ice reconnaissance in the
Kara and Laptev seas,
and in pilotage of ships along the Northern Sea Route.
In 1941, Cherevichny led an air expedition that made several
landings on ice in the Central Arctic Basin on an “USSR N-169”
aircraft.
For the first time, the region of the poles of relative
inaccessibility or the “pole of inaccessibility”, as it was then
called as never before seen by man, most remote from land and
inaccessible territory, was reached 1,500 km north-northeast
of Wrangel Island.
And in the postwar years, Cherevichny participated in many
high-latitude air expeditions.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of
December 6, 1949, for many years of work in polar aviation, courage
and heroism Cherevichny was awarded the title
Hero of
the Soviet Union with the award of the
Order of Lenin
and the Gold Star medal (No. 7807).
In 1955-1957
He headed the aviation detachment of the First Soviet Antarctic
Expedition, led by the Hero of the Soviet Union M.M.
Somov.
Cherevichny was awarded 3
Orders of
Lenin, the
Order of the Red Banner, 2 Orders of the
Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Orders of the
Red Star, the
Badge
of Honor, and medals.
He died in Moscow, buried in the
Novodevichy
cemetery.

Hydrographic Enterprise
Ministry of the Navy was assigned by the
decision of the Khatanga District Executive Committee in 1973.
