Fries Theodore Magnus

(28.10.1832 - 29.03.1913)

 

Swedish botanist and lichenologist, biographer of Carl Linnaeus, the eldest son of the "father of mycology" Elias Magnus Fries. The author of the names of a number of botanical taxa.

Born in Themsho village in the Swedish province of Småland. He was the first child in the family of Elias Vries and Kristina Vislander.

Theodore was influenced by his mycologist father, in 1851 he entered the biological faculty of Uppsala University. Already in 1853, he worked in the Botanical Gardens and the Uppsala Museum.

In 1857 he was awarded a doctorate degree in botany for his work in lichenology. In 1862, Fries was appointed adjunct professor of botany, in 1877 became a professor. From 1893 to 1899, Theodore Magnus was deputy head of Uppsala University.

Two of his nine children then became professors of botany — Robert Elias (1876–1966) and Thor Christian Elias (1886–1930).

He died in Uppsala.
