Hendriksen Peder Léonard
(1859–?)
Norwegian sailor, skipper, harpooner.
Born in Balfjord near Tromsø. From
childhood, he was accustomed to sea by his parents, from the age of
fourteen he had already gone to the Arctic Ocean on fishing vessels
by a harpooner and skipper.
In 1888, Hendriksen sailed to Novaya Zemlya on the yacht Enigeden
from Christiansand.
In the life of a simple sailor Hendriksen, two events occurred
that inscribed his name in the history of the geographical
development of the Arctic. In
1893–1896
as a harpooner, he took part in the outstanding
expedition of F.
Nansen on the
"Fram",
and in 1898-1902 also
on the "Fram", but already in the American Arctic and under the
direction of O.
Sverdrup.
He ended his career as an employee of the lighthouse on the
island of Andoya (or Andenes) Vesterålen archipelago. According
to many sources buried in the church cemetery of this island.
