Holm Gustav

(06.08.1849 – 13.03.1940)

 

Danish navigator, naval officer, researcher of Greenland, ethnographer, honorary doctor of philosophy of the University of Copenhagen.

Born in Copenhagen.

Holm received a military education, in 1870 he was promoted to lieutenant, in 1885 - to captain of the fleet.

In 1876, he participated in the Knud Steenstrup geological expedition to Julianehob, Greenland, in 1881 he was engaged in hydrographic work in the region of Gronsk, and from 1883 to 1885 he participated in the expedition to Ammassalik, engaged in the study of the east coast of Greenland. The expedition discovered 5 new fjords and 11 previously unknown Eskimo villages, whose population was 431 people and in which Danish power was established. Once again, he returned to Greenland in 1894, was engaged in leading missionary activities among the Eskimos in the Angmassalik area, and was respected among them. In 1899 he received the title of frigatten captain. From 1899 to 1909 he headed the Danish Hydrographic Bureau, and from 1912 he was the head of the experimental bureau.

For his work on the study of the Arctic, Holm was awarded medals of Paris (1891) and Danish (1895) geographical societies. Based on his research in Greenland, he published a number of scientific papers.

Died in Copenhagen less than a month before the Nazi invasion of Denmark. Buried cemetery Garrison (Garnisons Kirkegård).

The island between the coves of Alison and Inugsulik in the Baffin Sea on the west coast of Greenland.
