Shenrok Alexander Mikhailovich
(23.04.1853–01.06.1937)
Russian
geophysicist, meteorologist.
Born in the city of Temnikov, Tambov Province. He
came from Estland Germans, got his education in Germany, but over
the long years of his life in St. Petersburg, he became completely
Russified.
In 1877, Shenrok graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and
Physics at the University of Dorpat, and was an assistant to his
physical office.
In 1883 he accepted the offer of G.I. Wild became
a senior observer at the Main Physical Observatory, was the editor
of the Monthly Meteorological Bulletin, was a member of the Society
of Chamber Music Fans. In
1897, Shenrok was a collegiate adviser, in 1902–1913. -
State Councilor, in 1917 - Actual State Councilor.
In 1899-1901 Shenrok
participated in the “degree measurement” Russian expedition on
Svalbard.
Shenrok paid much attention to the study of thunderstorms, clouds
and floods. His
works were used to make forecasts for Neva floods. He
was a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society,
participated in the work of its Meteorological Commission.

He was awarded the Order of St.
Stanislav 2 degrees, St.
Anna 2 degrees, St.
Vladimir 4 degrees.
Cape in
the Kara Sea, southwest of Middendorf Bay. It
is mapped and named in 1901 by the Russian Polar Expedition.
Mountain on
the island of West Svalbard. Named
by Russian expedition for "degree measurement" in 1899-1901. |
