Schroetter Josef

( 14.03.1837 - 12.12.1894 )

German mycologist, doctor and scientist.

Born in the town of Pachku in Germany (now Paczków, Poland). He studied at the school in Pachku, in 1855 entered the University of Breslau with the intention to study medicine. In 1856, Schroetter became a member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy, in 1859 received the degree of doctor of medicine and doctor of philosophy.In 1865, he entered the Prussian army as a doctor for military service and as such took part in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870–1871, rising to the rank of colonel. His military achievements were awarded with orders of the Red Eagle, Grade 3, Crown, Grade 4, Tseringen Lion, and Iron Cross, Grade 2.

In 1886, Schroetter began to lecture at the University of Breslau. His teaching activities continued for several years, in 1890 he became a professor.

The result of Schroetter’s scientific work has become several books and articles, many species of flora and fungi have been discovered and described.

In 1894, he participated in a scientific expedition to Turkey, fell ill with malaria and died.
